A proud father-in-law has raised more than £5,000 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity after cycling from his home in Huddersfield to Hoole, Chester, in support of his daughter-in-law, Ashley, following her cancer diagnosis.

Ashley and Cris Slocombe, from Chester, had spent 17 years together and were due to celebrate their marriage with a big family celebration in France this summer. But in May, everything changed when Ashley was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, forcing the couple to rethink their plans.

Ashley began treatment at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, and it was her courage, along with the care she has received from the team there, that inspired her father-in-law David to take on an epic challenge of his own. The retired car salesman cycled all the way from Huddersfield to Hoole, where the couple live, raising thousands of pounds from generous sponsors along the way.

Rather than wait, Ashley and Cris decided to go ahead and get married in a small ceremony in Cheshire, followed by an intimate celebration at Ashley’s parents’ home. Their planned French celebration has been postponed until next year.

Ashley, 40, said: “In early May, our lives changed in an instant when I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Very quickly, I was referred to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, and from my very first appointment, the team there has been nothing short of exceptional.

“From my oncology consultants and specialist nurses to the chemotherapy team and everyone behind the scenes, we’ve been met with kindness, reassurance and professionalism every step of the way.

“They have an incredible ability to make what is undoubtedly one of the hardest experiences of your life feel just a little less overwhelming. Their warmth, compassion and, of course, the trademark Scouse sense of humour have helped carry us through some very difficult days.

“This year was also supposed to mark another huge milestone in our lives. After 17 years together, yes, patience is apparently one of my greatest virtues, Cris and I were due to get married. We had planned a small legal ceremony in June with our parents, followed by a wedding celebration in France this August with all our family and friends.

“As my treatment plan became clear, we made the difficult decision to postpone our French celebration until 2027. While it was heartbreaking to put those plans on hold, we knew it was the right decision.

“What we didn’t want to postpone was becoming husband and wife.”
On 28 June, surrounded by their closest family and friends, Ashley and Cris, 43, who runs Ushers Bakehouse in Hoole, got married.

She added: “It wasn’t the wedding we had originally imagined, but in many ways, it was even more special. It was a day filled with love, laughter and a reminder of what truly matters.”

“As we continue our weekly visits to Clatterbridge for treatment, we are constantly reminded how fortunate we are to be cared for by such an extraordinary team. They don’t just provide world-class treatment, they provide hope, compassion and humanity when patients and families need it most. That’s why fundraising for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity means so much to us.”

“We are incredibly grateful to my new father-in-law, David, for taking on an amazing fundraising challenge. His determination reflects the gratitude our whole family feels towards everyone who has cared for us over the past few months.”

David, 72, added: “Ashley is approaching this like all her endeavours, with boundless energy and optimism, and we are all looking forward to a successful completion.”

“Typically, we can’t help her with this, but I’m not one to sit on the sidelines.”

The couple are now looking forward to Ashley completing her treatment, so they can celebrate in style.

Ashley, an operations manager in corporate events, added: “We can’t wait to celebrate our Big Fat French Wedding 2.0 in 2027, but first, we’re focused on getting through treatment, together.”

Katrina Bury joined the Charity in 2016 and led the hugely successful New Hospital Appeal, which raised £12M to help build the 11-storey flagship hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, which opened in June 2020.

She led the team through the challenging Covid-19 period and ensured fundraising for local people with cancer continued, against the incredibly difficult backdrop of lockdown.

Emerging from this period, the Charity went on to establish itself as a force for good in Cheshire and Merseyside, with landmark events such as the Glow Green Nightwalk and the annual ball, raising millions to support patients and fund research.

In 2023, Katrina led on establishing a wholly independent Clatterbridge Cancer Charity with a new board of trustees.
In 2025/26 the Charity raised £4 million to fulfil its mission of investing in leading technology, funding life saving research, enhancing the patient environment and enabling innovations in care.

Katrina said: “It has been a privilege to play a part in improving the excellent treatment provided at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre over the last ten years.

“I am so proud of the team and all that we have achieved, and I am confident the Charity will continue to make a difference to patients in Cheshire and Merseyside.”

Chair of the Board of Trustees Brian Barwick OBE said: “I would like to thank Katrina for her hard work and dedication and pay tribute to her leadership of this great charity over ten years.

“What she has achieved to help local people with cancer has been remarkable and she leaves the Charity in great shape to continue that work.”

Katrina will be replaced as CEO by Clare White who takes up her new role in September.

Since arriving at Clatterbridge Cancer Charity last year, Clarence Bear has quickly become a favourite among our supporters.

From children and grandchildren of patients to friends, family members and patients themselves, Clarence has found homes across our community, bringing smiles, comfort and a reminder that no one faces cancer alone.

Why a teddy bear?

For many families affected by cancer, it can be difficult to know how to help. A simple gift like a teddy bear can offer reassurance during uncertain times, especially for children trying to understand what a loved one is going through.

We’ve heard from supporters who have bought Clarence for grandchildren whose grandparents are receiving treatment, and for children visiting loved ones in hospital. Others have chosen him as a gift for friends and family members undergoing treatment themselves, when the right words feel hard to find but the wish to show support remains strong.

For some, Clarence has become exactly that: a small but meaningful reminder that someone is thinking of them, cheering them on and standing beside them throughout their treatment journey.

Whether sitting by a hospital bedside, accompanying someone to appointments or simply offering comfort at home, Clarence has become a symbol of care, encouragement and hope during challenging times.

Some supporters have even bought a Clarence for themselves, as a comforting reminder of their own cancer journey and their connection to Clatterbridge.

Cancer affects the whole family, and sometimes comfort comes in unexpected forms. That’s why Clarence has become much more than a teddy bear. He’s a companion for long days, a familiar face during difficult times, and a thoughtful gift that shows someone you’re thinking of them.

At just £15, Clarence also helps support the work of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, funding services and support that go beyond what the NHS can provide for patients and their families.

Whether he’s sitting on a bedside table, accompanying a child on an adventure or simply offering a comforting presence at home, Clarence continues to spread kindness wherever he goes.

Fundraisers took to the water in a day of thrilling dragon boat racing to help local people with cancer.

More than £52,000 was raised by the 14 teams who competed in glorious sunshine at Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, with conditions on the Marine Lake proving perfect for a packed afternoon of racing.

The Clatterbridge Dragon Boat Regatta 2026 was sponsored by The Consortia Group, specialists in construction, refurbishment and maintenance, whose support helped make the event possible. Family, friends and colleagues lined the banks to cheer on the 238 competitors as they battled it out across qualifying rounds, finals and tail races throughout the day.

The qualifying rounds set the tone for an unpredictable and closely fought regatta. RALA Paddlers produced the standout performance of the morning, recording the fastest time of the entire day, 1:03.55, in their second qualifying round to head into the Major Final as favourites.

They were joined in the Major Final by B&M, HI Tide and Chlorination Street, all of whom impressed with consistently strong qualifying form. Just behind them, PIB, Weightmans Wave Riders, CUC and Dams Dragons secured their places in the Minor Final, while the remaining teams pushed on through the tail races for a final chance to climb the standings.

The Major Final delivered a dramatic finish to the day’s action. Chlorination Street, the team from Feedwater, had qualified fourth fastest but saved their best for when it mattered most. A superb time of 1:05.12 saw them surge to victory and claim the Clatterbridge Dragon Boat Regatta 2026 title, improving by more than ten seconds on their opening race of the day.

B&M pushed them all the way, finishing just 0.41 seconds behind in second place, while morning pace-setters RALA Paddlers held on for third. HI Tide rounded off the Major Final in fourth.

In the final classification, Chlorination Street finished first overall and were presented with the trophy by Stephanie Whittick, from our very special Dragon Boat Race sponsors, Consortia.

Events such as the Dragon Boat Regatta show the power of community, bringing together colleagues, friends and supporters to have fun, challenge themselves and make a genuine difference. Every paddle stroke, every sponsorship pound and every cheer from the bank helps fund the charity’s work supporting local people with cancer.

“We would like to thank everyone who took part in the Dragon Boat race. The conditions were perfect, the teams were all great sports, and everyone had a fabulous time. It is thanks to everyone who competed that we were able to raise more than £52,000 to help local people with cancer.”

The dragon boat race is a brilliant way to get colleagues together for team building, or simply to enjoy a fun day out with family and friends, all while raising money for a fantastic cause.

A team of 21 fundraisers have scaled Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in north Africa, raising an extraordinary £82,000 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

The five-day trek through the Atlas Mountains of Morocco culminated in reaching the 4,167-metre summit in near-perfect conditions. Every person who made that climb brought with them their own story, their own reason for lacing up their boots and taking on one of the most demanding landscapes on earth.

Among the group was Andrea Perrot, 51, from Birkdale, who was treated at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre following a breast cancer diagnosis in 2024.

“Clatterbridge Liverpool saved my life,” she said. “I was blown away by the team who treated me, and of course the chemo suite crew. Importantly, so was my mother, who was a nursing sister in the NHS for years. She’d never seen facilities like it, and everyone she met was so kind to her as well.”

For Andrea, who works in IT for the NHS, travelling to Morocco carried a deeper significance. It was a region she had loved for years.

“I adore Morocco and I have fond memories of a time in the Atlas Mountains years ago. I couldn’t believe the trek was in a place with a very special place in my heart. I was buzzing to go back, and because it was for Clatterbridge it made it even more special.”

For many in the group, the climb was a way of honouring people they had lost or were supporting through cancer.

Graham Macdonald, a 46-year-old teacher from New Brighton, described how cancer had touched almost every corner of his life.

“There have been many that it has touched,” he said. “Just weeks ago, my friend said her last goodbyes. One of the closest I have lost is my father, John Macdonald. He battled cancer for around five years towards the end of his life and was thankful for every second that the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity helped him to grasp.

The £82,000 raised by this remarkable group will make a real difference to patients and families across Cheshire, Merseyside and beyond, funding the kind of expert care and support that so many of these climbers spoke about with such gratitude.

What an absolutely incredible weekend. We are still riding high after watching 75 fearless supporters face their fears and take on the ultimate thrill for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

On Sunday, our brave fundraisers stepped out over the edge of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool, descending 150 feet down the side of the hospital. It was a day filled with nerves, adrenaline, immense courage and plenty of cheers from the crowd below.

Most importantly, your incredible efforts have raised over £50,000 to support local cancer care and vital research.

We want to say a massive thank you to all 75 participants who braved the heights, to everyone who came along to support them, and to each person who generously donated to their fundraising pages. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the amazing team of volunteers and instructors who kept everyone safe and motivated throughout the day.

At 76 years old, most people might be thinking about taking it easy. Barry Jackson has other plans. He’s preparing to abseil down the side of a building to give back to the team that looked after him for the past 15 years.

It’s a powerful reminder of why our fundraising events matter so much, and why supporters like Barry are the beating heart of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

Barry’s cancer story began just as he and his fiancée were preparing for their honeymoon to Mauritius, a routine health check with his new doctor in Heswall changed everything. He was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer requiring urgent intervention.

“We postponed the honeymoon and visited Cornwall instead after the wedding” he recalls.

Since that diagnosis, the team at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Wirral has been by Barry’s side. For over 15 years, his treatment has been managed with dedication and expertise, helping him live a full life despite the diagnosis.

“Clatterbridge medical staff have kept a close eye on my treatment and health for over 15 years”.

But gratitude alone isn’t enough for Barry. He’s already a monthly giver to Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, but he wanted to do something more. Something that would push him to his limits and make a real statement about how much this charity means to him.

Enter the abseil.

“I wanted to do something which put me personally to the test” he explains. And what better way than to abseil – something he hasn’t done in 21 years!

Barry’s story doesn’t exist in isolation. Around him, cancer continues to touch lives. He’s lost a dear school friend to bowel cancer. His father-in-law passed away from stomach cancer just four months ago and one of his best friends from university has just started cancer therapy for renal and lung cancer.

“Sadly, most of us know a family member or friend affected by some form of this dreadful killer” Barry reflects.

It’s a sobering truth, but it’s also a call to action. Every person who takes part in an event like the abseil is doing it for someone they love – whether they’re going through treatment themselves, or honouring the memory of someone who did.

Barry’s enthusiasm for the upcoming abseil is infectious. “I can’t wait to join the brave folk doing the abseil on June 7th” he says.

Our major fundraising appeal to modernise cancer treatment facilities at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Halton unit has raised an incredible £750,000 towards our £1 million target. With just £250,000 left to raise, we’re calling on our community to help us reach the finish line by October 2026.

The Halton unit plays a vital role in delivering cancer treatments like chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other targeted therapies to patients across Halton, Warrington and surrounding communities. It means people can receive life-saving treatment close to home, near their families and support networks.

But whilst the care provided is excellent, the facilities no longer reflect the high standard of treatment our patients deserve. It’s time to create an environment that matches the quality of care.

Your donations will fund a complete refurbishment that will:

  • Increase capacity to meet growing demand for cancer services in our region.
  • Provide comfortable treatment chairs and flexible bays allowing patients to choose whether to chat with others or enjoy greater privacy during treatment.
  • Create a bright, modern treatment environment that patients and staff can be proud of for many years to come.
  • Enable more complex and combination therapies to be delivered locally.

This isn’t just about making things look nicer. It’s about creating a space where people facing one of the most difficult experiences of their lives can feel safe, comfortable and cared for.

We launched the appeal with support from Wolves Assistant Coach Richard Marshall, the Mayor of Halton Cllr Martha Lloyd Jones, and the Warrington Wolves rugby league squad, led by head coach Sam Burgess. They visited the ward to meet patients and staff and see the plans first-hand.

Cllr Lloyd Jones, her Consort and husband Peter, and Deputy Mayor Cllr Pamela Wallace joined the Wolves players to show their backing for this crucial project.

The Mayor shared a deeply personal reason for her support:

“I lost my mum to cancer when I was a young girl. When she was being treated, my sister and I had to travel by two buses and a ferry to visit her in The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Wirral. Things have improved so much since then and it is so important for both patients and their families to have a facility like this locally. The plans for the refurbishment are great and will only improve what is already an excellent treatment centre with a lovely atmosphere.”

Patricia Barlow, from Stockton Heath, is currently receiving treatment at the Halton ward following a breast cancer diagnosis. She understands better than most why this appeal matters:

“This is a club I never wanted to be part of but the staff in Halton immediately made me feel safe and cared for. I would say to anyone getting treated here ‘you are in good hands’. This modernisation will enable the staff to care for patients in a better environment, and they will be able to treat more people closer to home. The local community needs this ward, and I would appeal to everyone to back this appeal.”

When Everton Women stars Aurora Galli, Courtney Brosnan and Clare Wheeler visited our Teenage and Young Adult ward, they witnessed first-hand the vital support we provide to young people facing cancer.

The special visit, arranged by our long-standing partner Hill Dickinson, gave the players an insight into how your donations help make a real difference to young lives during the toughest of times.

Teenage Cancer Trust Youth Support Coordinator Franchessca Sefton guided the trio through the specialist unit, which cares for cancer patients aged 16 to 24 from across Cheshire and Merseyside, Lancashire, South Cumbria, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

During the tour, Aurora, Courtney and Clare learned how life can change dramatically for young people going through cancer treatment. They saw first-hand the wider support network we fund to help young patients navigate this challenging journey.

This is where your generosity truly comes to life. Through Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, we fund initiatives that create a vital sense of community for young people during treatment, including:

  • Days out that offer respite from hospital routine.
  • Lunch clubs where young patients can connect with others who understand their experience.
  • Support programmes that help maintain a sense of normality during an abnormal time.

 

These aren’t just nice extras. For young people whose lives have been turned upside down by cancer, these funded activities provide essential emotional support, friendships and moments of joy that complement their medical treatment.

The players spent meaningful time with patients, signing footballs, hearing their stories and sharing light-hearted conversations about football. These simple moments of connection brought smiles and lifted spirits across the ward.

Everton and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan reflected on the experience: “It was really special to spend time at Clatterbridge and meet some of the young people and staff. The positivity and resilience they show is incredibly inspiring. If we can bring a bit of joy to their day, even for a short time, then it means a lot to us. It also gives us a real appreciation for the amazing work being done here and the support the charity provides.”

The visit also celebrated Hill Dickinson’s incredible two-year partnership with us, during which the firm has raised £31,000. Hill Dickinson has been Clatterbridge Cancer Charity’s nominated charity for their Liverpool office and is the official naming rights partner for Everton’s magnificent new stadium on the banks of the River Mersey.

A Hill Dickinson spokesperson said: “Over the past two years, Hill Dickinson colleagues have come together to support Clatterbridge Cancer Charity as our Liverpool office charity. The enthusiasm, generosity and teamwork shown by our colleagues reflects our shared values and our desire to make a meaningful difference in the communities where we live and work.”

Our Corporate Fundraising Manager, Helen McLoughlin, added: “It was an honour to welcome players from Everton Women into the hospital to meet patients and staff. It gave a real boost to everyone they spoke to, and we hope we have given them a great insight into the care on offer for teenagers and young adults treated here.

We also want to say a huge thank you to Hill Dickinson for their fundraising efforts, which will help us make a real difference to the one in two people in our region affected by cancer.”

We’re delighted to support our Charity of the Year partner, Liverpool Welsh Choral, as they seek passionate singers to join their ranks for an exciting 2026/27 season.

Liverpool Welsh Choral is inviting applications from singers aged 18 and over to join their acclaimed 100-voice choir. Whether you’re an experienced chorister or looking to develop your vocal skills, they’d love to hear from you. All voice parts are welcome, with particular need for altos and basses.

The choir, established in 1900, has built a stellar reputation for polished performances of classical and contemporary choral works.

Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Keith Orrell and accompanied by the acclaimed Stephen Hargreaves, members enjoy the exhilaration and therapeutic benefits of singing beautiful music alongside some of the region’s finest voices.

Despite their name, Liverpool Welsh Choral welcomes members from all backgrounds and locations. The choir sings in many languages including Italian, Latin, German and Welsh, with pronunciation tuition always provided.

Interested singers are invited to attend three taster sessions to experience singing with the choir.

Liverpool Welsh Choral has been a wonderful partner in our mission to support cancer patients across Cheshire and Merseyside.

Their commitment was showcased in a successful fundraising Christmas concert featuring mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge, and we’re looking forward to more collaborations in the coming seasons.

By sharing their recruitment call, we hope to help them continue growing their choir so they can keep creating beautiful music and supporting Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
