“Clatterbridge Saved My Life”: Allison’s Story of Giving Back After Breast Cancer

When Allison Wadsworth from Ellesmere Port was diagnosed with breast cancer at 48, her world changed overnight. But thanks to the care she received at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral, she’s now using her experience to support others facing cancer.
Diagnosed in 2022 after discovering a lump, Allison underwent a lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Now 51, she’s not only a survivor—she’s a passionate volunteer for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

“Clatterbridge saved my life,” Allison says. “I’m glad to be able to do my bit to help other people instead of me. It’s just a couple of hours of my time, and if that can help someone else in the future, then it’s worth it.”

Allison has become a familiar face at fundraising collections across Cheshire, playing a vital role in the Charity’s mission to support the one in two people who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
But for Allison, volunteering is about more than just giving back—it’s about connection.

“One of the best things is meeting people who want to talk about Clatterbridge,” she explains. “Some share their own experiences, others talk about loved ones who’ve been treated. It’s a great way to spread the word about the amazing work Clatterbridge does.”

Volunteers like Allison are at the heart of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. From distributing collection tubs to helping at events or even taking photos, volunteers contribute hundreds of hours each year to support life-saving cancer care.

Tanya Simpson, Community Fundraiser for Cheshire, says:

“We’re so grateful to Allison and all our volunteers. We simply couldn’t do what we do without them. Volunteering is a brilliant way to support cancer patients, meet new people, and learn new skills. We offer full training and help people find roles that suit them.”

Whether you have a few hours to spare or want to get more involved, there are many ways to volunteer with Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
