A Bridgerton Soiree: Carrying on Nicola’s Legacy

When Danielle Goffin Ogilby’s sister, Nicola, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, Danielle stayed by her side. During those long days in the hospital, she saw firsthand exactly what a difference fundraising makes to the lives of patients and their families.

Nicola was just 45 when she passed away, leaving behind her husband, Eddie, and their two young children. Now, Danielle is hosting a red-carpet event to raise money for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity in her sister’s memory.

The sisters grew up with a close bond in North Wales and remained inseparable as adults, even moving to Chester at the same time to stay close to one another. Danielle describes her sister as “incredibly kind and the most loyal person you could know.”

Nicola was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in March 2017. After a period where the family thought she was all clear, she suffered seizures while on holiday in Spain. Doctors discovered four tumours on her brain.

“Clatterbridge was incredible when looking after Nicola and our family during her treatment. Although we didn’t get the outcome we hoped for, I’ve seen how much of a difference every penny raised makes.”

Before she passed away, Nicola was a fundraiser herself, once raising £10,000 through a barre pilates event. Danielle has made it her mission to continue that legacy, previously abseiling down the Clatterbridge building and hosting her own pilates brunch.

This year, she’s doing something even bigger. On March 6th, Danielle is hosting a glamorous Bridgerton-inspired ‘soiree’ at The Chester Fields.

Organising an event of this scale isn’t easy while working full-time and raising two children, but for Danielle, the motivation is simple.

“I just keep looking at Nicola’s picture and that keeps me going,” she says. “If I can save one person’s life with the money we raise, that’s all I can ask for. I wouldn’t be asking friends and family to make donations if I hadn’t seen for myself how much of a difference Clatterbridge makes.”

We are so grateful to Danielle, and to Mark Jarvis at The Chester Fields for selflessly donating the venue, for their incredible support. As our Community Fundraiser Tanya Simpson says, it’s thanks to people like Danielle that we can continue to help the one in two people affected by cancer in our region.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
