"What can I say? All the staff at Clatterbridge were amazing."

Lesley ringing the bell after treatment at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

My name is Lesley and my grandson and I took part in this year’s Glow Green Night Walk in Liverpool on Friday February 6th.

In 2022, I retired from the NHS working as a medical secretary. I loved going out walking.

However, it all changed in March 2024 when I noticed that I had a continuous pain in my left groin area for approximately six weeks. I went through a series tests, before two admissions in hospital. It was on the 24th July 2024, that I was told I had pancreatic cancer.

Upon hearing the news, I was relieved. I had lost a stone in weight by this point, so I was relieved to know what was going on.

My motto was “what will be, will be”.

My husband and children took it harder than I did as they were worried about me.

I had surgery and then began chemotherapy in August 2024 at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre -Liverpool.

What can I say? All the staff at Clatterbridge were amazing. I never felt scared or alone. The staff showed so much compassion, but always in an upbeat way. I used to look forward to my chemo sessions, chilling out, looking out across the city skyline.

Following treatment, I saw the adverts for the Glow Green walk on social media and knew it was something I wanted to do. My grandson asked me if we could do it together, which I am thrilled about. He works at Clatterbridge as well.

Even though I have recovered well, I really want to give something back for all the hard work and dedication shown by the wonderful staff.

You can join our Glow Green Walk in Chester on Friday 27th February here.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
