Facing Ocular Melanoma: Meg’s Journey and Her Mission to Give Back

In December 2024, a routine eye test changed everything for Meg. What began as a standard check-up led to a diagnosis of ocular melanoma—a rare form of cancer that affects the pigment-producing cells in the eye.

Just months earlier, Meg had married her husband, Jake, and the couple were looking forward to their honeymoon. But those plans were quickly put on hold as Meg was referred to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral, home to the UK’s National Centre for Eye Proton Therapy. It’s the only facility in the country offering this highly specialised treatment.

Meg underwent a week of daily proton therapy, travelling each day from her home in Stockport. The journey was exhausting, but the care she received made all the difference.

“The cancer I have is rare, and it was a real shock to find out I had it. I’m incredibly grateful that the optician spotted something unusual, and I’ve been in such good hands since.”

While the treatment is complete, Meg’s journey isn’t over. She’ll continue to have regular check-ups, and it will take about a year to know if the treatment has been fully successful. One of the most difficult parts is the uncertainty—especially the possibility of losing some or all of her sight in the affected eye.

Despite the challenges, Meg has found strength in her support network of family and friends. She’s also been sharing her experience on TikTok, using the platform to connect with others and raise awareness.

Now, Meg is taking on a new challenge to give back. Alongside six friends, she’ll be participating in the 5K Inflatable Challenge in Knutsford this August. The team hopes to raise £1,000 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

“It’s our way of saying thank you and helping others going through similar experiences. Whether it’s £1 or £10, every donation brings us closer to our goal.”

The course promises plenty of fun—running, jumping, sliding, and maybe a few tumbles too! But most importantly, it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and the incredible care provided by Clatterbridge.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
