In an inspiring show of strength and community spirit, Runcorn dad Michael Donnelly has raised over £4,000 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity by completing a 100km run in a single day—all in memory of his beloved wife, Charlotte.
Michael’s incredible challenge saw him run eight laps of a 12.5km route near his home, pushing through pain and fatigue to support local people affected by cancer. His motivation? To honour Charlotte’s life and thank the staff at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre who cared for her during her battle with renal cancer.
“It was an amazing day with some great moments,” said Michael. “I’d like to thank everyone who supported me.”
Michael wasn’t alone on his journey. He was joined at the start by local running group The Silverbacks, Charlotte’s former colleagues, and even Runcorn’s iconic Pink Tutu Guy, David Ash, known for his own charitable runs. Support came from all corners of the community—including dads from local schools and even an 11-year-old boy who joined in to help lift the pace.
Despite the emotional and physical toll, Michael persevered.
“At the halfway point, all was going to plan,” he said. “But as soon as I started the 51st kilometre, my legs were feeling it. Each loop got harder, but the support from everyone really helped. It was amazing to have Charlotte’s family and our two children there—they were the first to congratulate me.”
The day ended with a heartfelt celebration at a local pub, surrounded by friends, family, and supporters.
Michael’s fundraising efforts are a tribute to Charlotte and a way to give back to the charity that supported them.
“When Charlotte was diagnosed with renal cancer, the team at Clatterbridge provided exceptional care. They helped manage her symptoms and made sure she was as comfortable as possible. Sadly, despite their efforts, the treatment was unsuccessful, and Charlotte passed away. I’m fundraising to help others facing similar challenges.”
Clatterbridge Cancer Charity funds vital projects, equipment, and research across its centres in Liverpool, Wirral, and Aintree, as well as a network of chemotherapy clinics throughout Cheshire and Merseyside. The charity is currently working towards a £5 million research goal over five years to improve cancer care and discover new treatments.
