Vicky Green’s inspiring journey in support of Clatterbridge

As the festive season closes, Chester resident Vicky Green is looking forward to a joyful Christmas after a challenging year of cancer treatment. Diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer a year ago, Vicky has undergone chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy. Now, the 31-year-old is excited to celebrate and has dedicated a Clatterbridge Fairy to her mum, Sue.

Vicky said: “I am a Christmassy girl through and through, and I am glad that the last 12 months have come full circle, allowing me to really enjoy Christmas this year. That is why I am supporting this year’s Fairy Appeal to help the one in two people across Merseyside and Cheshire who will be affected by cancer. I am dedicating my Fairy to my mum, as I couldn’t have done this without her.”

Vicky’s journey began in October 2023 while watching the Great British Bake Off, when she noticed a lump. After multiple tests, her diagnosis was confirmed just before Christmas. This led to the cancellation of a dream holiday to South Africa with her then-partner, now-fiancé, Mick. The couple faced the news together, with Vicky finding it hardest to tell her mum, who works at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral.

Despite the challenges, Vicky received immense support and excellent care at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. “From January to May of this year, I received chemotherapy at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral. Spending so much time there, I really got to know the nurses on the Delamere Ward. They were all so lovely, especially as my partner Mick, who works in the army, couldn’t be with me,” Vicky explains.

After cancelling their holiday, Vicky and Mick enjoyed some days out, and Mick proposed at the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno. “He had planned on asking me to marry him in South Africa, but Llandudno was just as amazing,” Vicky recalls. The couple are now planning their wedding for July 2026 and are grateful to celebrate Christmas with family this year.

Vicky has been a dedicated supporter of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and recently joined the team at a festive event in Chester to promote the Fairy Appeal. Megan Owen, Fundraiser at Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, expressed her gratitude, saying: “We were thrilled to see Vicky in Chester and would like to say a huge thank you to her for supporting the 2024 Fairy Appeal.

This special appeal sees families across Merseyside, Cheshire, and beyond dedicating a virtual Fairy in memory of a loved one, to thank a staff member, or to celebrate someone special. Every dedication and donation through the Fairy Appeal supports the one in two people affected by cancer in our region, and we are truly thankful to all those who support this appeal and our charity throughout the year.”

The Fairy was designed by Charity Patron and world-renowned artist Emma Rodgers. Megan added, “We would also like to say a big thank you to Emma for her dedication to the Fairy Appeal and creating a beautiful and unique design.”

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
