From Ducks to Donations: Mary Spooner’s Inspiring Journey

We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of our remarkable supporters, the incredible Mary Spooner. At 81 years young, Mary has written and produced a delightful children’s book titled “Chuck the Duck”. This heart-warming story is based on a real family of ducks that made their home on top of Mary’s shed.

Mary’s book has sold 200 copies and an impressive £600 has been raised for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity!

Mary shared her personal connection to Clatterbridge: “My brother and sister were both treated at Clatterbridge but have both now sadly passed away. I now come to Clatterbridge myself as I was diagnosed with lung cancer. I was already used to coming to the centre from when I would attend with my brother and sister for their appointments, so I already felt at ease knowing how lovely the centre is and the exceptional level of care I’d receive.”

During her treatment, Mary found solace and inspiration in watching the ducks daily. She began drawing them and eventually penned the book, a process that took her 3-4 months. After completing 12 sessions of radiotherapy, Mary expressed her gratitude for the care she received, saying she wanted to give back to Clatterbridge for saving her life.

Mary, your creativity and generosity are an inspiration to us all.

From everyone at Clatterbridge, thank you for your incredible support and for sharing Chuck’s story with the world.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
