Running helps me keep fit and fundraise for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

Dr Ian Lampkin Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

I’m Dr Ian Lampkin, a Clinical Oncologist at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre specialising in urology and skin cancers.

I decided to take up running as part of a health kick a few years ago when I lost eight and a half stone. I made the sport part of my goal and started entering organised runs.

I decided to combine this new love of running with fundraising for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and I took on the Tunnel 10k run in 2023 and did a 5k series around the same time.

After having a break for a year or so, I am back at it after promising all my amazing patients I would do another run.

I am taking on the Port Sunlight 10k in June and it is timely as following a recent experience I can now appreciate even to a slight degree the anxiety and stress patients can go through when waiting for test results.

I had a positive FIT test after a routine health screening review, and on seeing a colorectal surgeon a colonoscopy was recommended.

There was most fortunately no significant pathology, just a very common condition, and while we shouldn’t be embarrassed to talk about problems with our bowels, I wanted to raise awareness and highlight the importance of going for a bowel screen, especially as April is Bowel Cancer Awareness month.

It is great to do fundraising for the charity that helps our patients at Clatterbridge.

I began working at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre ten years ago, at the end of my training in general medicine. I specialise in urological cancers, treating cancers in the bladder and prostate – and also skin cancer.

I enjoy the complexities of the science behind these types of cancers as well as the nature of the patients I treat. My team and I look after so many lovely people and it’s a pleasure to care for them.

If you want to join me and the other runners in Port Sunlight fundraise for Clatterbridge then you can find out more and enter the race here.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
