We are delighted to announce the launch of Turning Heads, an inspiring printmaking project bringing together The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, and National Museums Liverpool.
Led by textile artist Rachael Howard, Senior Lecturer of Textile Design at Bath Spa University, this innovative project is delivering a series of printmaking workshops at Clatterbridge over the summers of 2024 and 2025.
Focused primarily on patients in our Oncology Unit, but also welcoming non-Oncology patients, Turning Heads offers participants the opportunity to create bespoke designs for bandanas and headwear using various printing techniques. The best part? Participants get to keep and wear their unique creations, transforming a medical experience into a moment of creativity and self-expression.
For many patients navigating cancer treatment, hair loss and changes to appearance can feel overwhelming. Turning Heads provides not just practical headwear, but also a powerful outlet for creativity, identity, and personal expression during what can be an incredibly challenging time.
The project recognises that healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional and creative too.
The response to Turning Heads has been overwhelmingly positive. Participants have shared:
“This is a fantastic experience and good to have for people on their cancer journey. Wonderful.”
“Really appreciated learning a new skill.”
As Turning Heads continues through 2025, we’re excited to see more patients discover the therapeutic power of creativity and walk away with beautiful, bespoke pieces that are uniquely theirs.
Projects like this remind us that cancer care is about so much more than medical treatment. It’s about dignity, identity, joy, and the small moments that make a big difference.
