What is World Cancer Day?

World Cancer Day is a global initiative held every year on February 4th to raise awareness about cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. This day, led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), unites people worldwide in the fight against cancer, aiming to reduce the global impact of this devastating disease.

Cancer touches millions of lives but it doesn’t define who we are. This year’s World Cancer Day theme is “United by Unique”, which places people at the centre of care. United by Unique means that everyone has unique needs, unique perspectives, and a unique story to tell, yet people touched by cancer are united in a shared ambition to lower the cancer burden, to see cancer treated successfully, and to lead better lives with cancer.

Let’s come together to rewrite the future of cancer care – one where the needs of people and communities come first.

At Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, we are dedicated to supporting people with cancer and their families and we are excited to mark World Cancer Day with our Glow Green Night Walk on Friday, February 7th, 2025. This event is not just a walk; it’s a luminous journey through Liverpool, highlighting iconic landmarks glowing green in support of cancer awareness and research.

By joining the Glow Green Night Walk, you are directly contributing to pioneering cancer care and research at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. Your participation helps fund vital treatments and innovations that make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients.

The walk is also a fantastic opportunity to come together with friends, family and fellow supporters to enjoy live entertainment along the 8km route and take part in a memorable evening.

During the walk, we will have a special moment at the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, where hundreds of lanterns will light up the steps – these lanterns, which you can personalise, are a beautiful way to honour and remember loved ones affected by cancer.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
