“Why I Took the Leap – And Why You Should Too”

Hi, I’m Paul – proud dad to Olivia and Grace, and husband to Tracy.

Over the years, I’ve taken part in a number of charity events, usually running challenges. But when I saw the Liverpool Cathedral Abseil advertised, I knew I had to do it. As someone who’s lived on the Wirral all my life, the Cathedral is such a powerful symbol of our local heritage – and the chance to abseil down it was too good to miss.

But this wasn’t just about the thrill. I took part in memory of my wonderful mother-in-law, Linda Harrison-McDonald.

Linda was a huge part of my life for 14 years. She was a loving mum to Tracy and her brother Paul, a devoted nana to Jacob, Olivia, Josh and Grace, and the kind of mother-in-law anyone would be lucky to have. She is deeply missed by all of us.

When Linda was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma, The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre became a vital part of her journey. The care and compassion shown by the team – especially in the final week of her life – meant the world to us. My wife Tracy was able to stay by her mum’s side during those precious final days, something she’ll always be grateful for.

That’s why I abseiled. To honour Linda. To give back to the place that gave us so much. And to help ensure other families receive the same incredible support.

Now, I want to encourage you to take on your own challenge – by signing up for the Clatterbridge Abseil.

This unforgettable experience will see you descend the side of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, all while raising vital funds for patients and families facing cancer.

Whether you’re doing it in memory of a loved one, to support someone currently going through treatment, or just to conquer your fears – this is your chance to make a real difference.

Emma Rodgers

The Clatterbridge Fairy was specially created by our Charity Patron, internationally acclaimed sculptor, Emma Rodgers.

We asked Emma to share why she's supporting our Fairy Appeal:
"I have been a Patron of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for 14 years now, as my mum is cared for there. They are incredible with her and getting the 'all clear' was a wonderful moment. They've done more for me than I can ever do for them, so creating the Fairy seems a small thing, really.

And this year I will be dedicating my Fairy to Professor Myint and the Team at Clatterbridge love from Emma, Milly, Annie and family."
